IET Digital Media Lab
exploring new media and internet technologies that support teaching and learning

Friday, August 1, 2008

Welcome

IET experiments with a variety of new digital media and internet technolgies to support the integration of instructional technology into the College curriculum.

Two instructional implementations of technology that resulted from research and development in the DML and the Applications Development and Evaluation Lab (ADEL) are Course Management Systems (Blackboard) and personal document sharing systems (eDisk).

Current projects include electronic media distribution (streaming) systems, interactive media learning objects, personal content managment systems and weblogs. You can explore theses topics and others in more detail by following the links under the "Current Projects" section.

The site also contains topical items from technology news sources and links to other sites of interest outside the DML. For more information about the IET Digital Media Lab at Franklin & Marshall, contact the Director of IET.

The Rise of Crowdsourcing

Remember outsourcing? Sending jobs to India and China is so 2003. The new pool of cheap labor: everyday people using their spare cycles to create content, solve problems, even do corporate R & D. [Wired]

Like outsourcing, crowdsourcing is a model that depends on work being done outside the traditional company walls, but while outsourcing is typically performed by lower paid professionals, crowdsourcing relies on a combination of volunteers and low-paid amateurs who use their spare time to create content, solve problems, or even do corporate R&D. Crowds targeted for crowdsourcing include garage scientists, amateur videographers, freelancers, photo enthusiasts, data companies, writers, smart mobs and the electronic herd. [Wikipedia]
